brahman brahma-vid-uttamät
labdhvä jïänaà sa-vijïänaà
räjarñiù käà gatià gataù
sanat-kumärät—from Sanat-kumära; bhagavataù—the most powerful; brahman—my dear brähmaëa; brahma-vit-uttamät—well versed in the Vedic knowledge; labdhvä—after achieving; jïänam—knowledge; sa-vijïänam—for practical application; räja-åñiù—the great saintly King; käm—which; gatim—destination; gataù—achieved.
Translation and Purport by His Divine Grace, Srila Prabhupada.
Translation
The great saintly King, Mahäräja Påthu, received knowledge from Sanat-kumära, who was the greatest Vedic scholar. After receiving knowledge to be applied practically in his life, how did the saintly King attain his desired destination?
Purport
There are four Vaiñëava sampradäyas (systems) of disciplic succession. One sampradäya comes from Lord Brahmä, one from the goddess of fortune, one from the Kumäras, headed by Sanat-kumära, and one from Lord Çiva. These four systems of disciplic succession are still going on. As King Påthu has illustrated, one who is serious about receiving transcendental Vedic knowledge must accept a guru, or spiritual master, in one of these four disciplic successions. It is said that unless one accepts a mantra from one of these sampradäyas, the so-called mantra will not act in Kali-yuga. Many sampradäyas have sprung up without authority, and they are misleading the people by giving unauthorized mantras. The rascals of these so-called sampradäyas do not observe the Vedic rules and regulations. Although they are addicted to all kinds of sinful activities, they still offer the people mantras and thus mislead them. Intelligent persons, however, know that such mantras will never be successful, and as such they never patronize such upstart spiritual groups. People should be very careful of these nonsensical sampradäyas. To get some facility for sense gratification, unfortunate people in this age receive mantras from these so-called sampradäyas. Påthu Mahäräja, however, showed by his example that one should receive knowledge from a bona fide sampradäya. Therefore Mahäräja Påthu accepted Sanat-kumära as his spiritual master.

Oh this purport really it all for me because I was a victim of one of these so-called sampradayas. I had to pay money actually to get my mantra. The Bona fide spiritual master doesn't knew the money-making business to selling mantras. You see, this bogus guru, he was selling mantras and what about the regular principles? Nothing. You can do whatever you want. There is no regular principles at all. Just pay me the money and get the mantra and this way you become self-realized. So I got the mantra, I paid the money, it was a student discount, $35. Of course, that lot of money in the old days. I used to pay 30 dollars for my rent here in Austin. So 35 dollars was a big money, it was like a whole month's rent. And I got my mantra, Aang, Aang, Aang, Aang, but it didn't work. There was no lift off, it was like an endless runway, but no lift off. But then when I got this mantra Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare Instant lift off ,You see Instant lift off. Of course, sometimes they remind me, they say, well how can I get taste? I'm chanting but I don't get taste. Well, if we're chanting we're not getting taste, that means we're just chanting mechanically, you know, just like a machine, you know, like a tape recorder going, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. You are actually putting feeling into it. Krishna is the Supreme Personality of God. He is not a myth. He is not a Hindu myth. He is actually a Supreme Person, the source of all existence. And I happened to find out what his name is. His name is Krishna. Everything is acting under his direction. The sun is rising and setting, the moon rises, the seasons, everything is going on according to his order and his direction. So he's the supreme controller, he's the supreme benefactor, also the supreme well-wisher of all living beings. So why not I reconnect with him? Why don't I get on good terms with him, come back to my relationship with him? Why should I neglect him and say who cares about that, who cares about him. Somebody wrote me spit in his face, can you imagine how offensive that is? No, we should have, This is the person, actually by his grace, even I'm breathing right now. The air I'm breathing, he's giving me the air to breathe. By his mercy, my heart is beating. I depend on him at every minute for my existence.
So since I'm totally dependent, wouldn't it make good sense to have a good relationship with that person who is the source of all existence. And the amazing thing is he is a sarva-jna. he knows everything. Not that I have to get on some spaceship and travel to some distant planet, he actually has fully knows everything that's going on in my brain right now he knows everything I'm saying and everything I'm doing he knows everything about everyone so why not get back in a harmonious relationship with that person as a source of all existence why not get back in a sweet loving harmonious relationship, that's called intelligence because when one does that, you enter a state of unlimited bliss, you see, where all anxieties are just a figment imagination actually. Prabhupada very nicely states in the Sri Iso Upanishad that very often quoting that one should not be happy or distressed over desirables and undesirables knowing that such feelings are just created by the mind. So one may think, oh I'm so devastated, this has happened and I can't handle this too much. But actually, see the problem is not the external situation.
The external situation is never the cause of our anxiety, it's our attitude. There's an interesting slogan, an attitude of gratitude creates altitude. Do you learn how to have an attitude of gratitude that everything is coming to you by the mercy of Krishna, then you will take off like a rocket into the higher realm of transcendental bliss. So we have to stop having this judgmental, who are you to treat me this way, what do you mean by talking to me like this, what are you doing, This judgmental sort of attitude, not seeing a loving hand of Krishna going at every minute in every situation. So this is intelligence, This is common sense. Since Krishna is giving us unlimited mercy at every minute, why don't I reciprocate with that loving mercy He has given me and showing my appreciation by chanting His name in a loving mood. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. By bowing down to Him, by bowing down to Him, He is here, He is here right here in his Lord's Damodar along with Srimati Radharani . He is right here standing with us in this room. So I can bow down to him, I can offer my food to him, I can dress him, I can undress him, I can do service for him in his transcendental manifestation here. And What to speak of his preaching mission. He's come as Lord Chaitanya to say the most important thing is, yāre dekha, tāre kaha ‘kṛṣṇa’-upadeśa āmāra ājñāya guru hañā tāra’ ei deśa. Whomever you meet, instruct him in the teachings of Krishna, and this way become Guru, deliver the people of this country. So we actually take up his preaching mission, you see. The Bhagavad has given the order to deliver the world, So we have to be in a good state. We have to be delivered ourselves, chanting nicely, following the regular principles, nice loving relationships with the Vaishnavas, with the spiritual master, nice attitude towards Krishna, Radharani, and the gopis, and the Acharyas, you see, in the proper state of mind. If 1 is cultivating that proper state of mind, every minute you tell you, you know, keeping it in the mind, you see the mind gets off the track, bring that rascal back, you see. yato yato niśhcharati manaśh chañchalam asthiram . You see your mind getting off the track, you have to intelligently analyze your mental state every minute. Is this mental state Krishna conscious or is it egotism? Is it my false ego flaring up? The Fourth of July fireworks display going on, right? Or New Year's Eve, boom, boom, boom. My false ego, Who are you talking to? What do you mean? That's false ego. We have to learn to see the loving hand of Krishna blessing us at every minute, in every situation.
Why is Krishna doing this to me? Why is Krishna? No, no. Why am I not appreciating how Krishna is giving me His unlimited loving mercy every minute? We instead of being on Krishna's case, Why are you doing this to me, Krishna? We should be on our own case. You see, on the guru's case, or on the Godbrother's case, or the husband's case, or the wife's case. We should be on our own case. Why are you such a fool, stupid idiot? You don't see the loving hand of Krishna acting in every minute in all times, places and circumstances.
We should be on our own case. Okay rascal, stop your nonsense. You have been torching me long enough. You rascal mind, you dragged me through millions and millions of life forms trying to enjoy it this way and that way. I've been cheated again and again and again 8400000 varieties, different ways of being cheated. I wanted to be happy, and I got this body, I got that body, even the demigod body was cheating, being cheated. Because there is no happiness in this material world. This is a place of misery. There's no happiness here. Well I got an American body, I got an Aussie body, I got this and that. We are all being cheated here. Even being an Indra or even a Brahma, the chief demigod in the whole universe, is all being cheated. Because our actual position is jīvera ‘svarūpa’ haya kṛṣṇera ‘nitya-dāsa’, our actual position is the eternal service of Krishna and his transcendental pastimes in the spiritual world. So we have to get back in that mood of loving reciprocation with Krishna. Just as the Vrajavasi are having loving reciprocation with Krishna, they are not thinking of themselves, they are always thinking, how can I please Krishna? The gopis dress to please Krishna, not thinking of their own sense enjoyment, they think how can I believe Krishna by dressing in this way? Everybody is acting in the spiritual world for the pleasure of Krishna. What's that called? Krishna consciousness, right? That's called Krishna consciousness. Everything for the pleasure of Krishna, isn't it? Yes, everything for the pleasure of Krishna. So, we have to get out of this I, me and mine consciousness. They have a saying, I, me and mine will make you feel real fine. Actually it doesn't. I, me and my consciousness makes you feel miserable actually. I, me and my consciousness makes you feel miserable. We have to get out of this I, me and my consciousness and get into Krishna consciousness. Krishna , Krsna’stu Bhagawan swayam. Who is an amazing person who served all existence. Who is tending the cows in the abode built with spiritual gems. Who is surrounded by millions of purpose trees. Who is very adept at playing on the flute, who has blooming eyes like lotus flowers, who is headed for death with a peacock feather. We have to learn how to reconnect with that person right now these material bodies are miserable.
The material body means misery, birth, death, old age, disease. It's like I'm suffering from various diseases right now as I give you this lecture. I'm suffering with diseases. As I said here, not me, but this body is suffering with diseases. I'm speaking in this lecture, I'm being tortured, my body is being tortured by various diseases. Even now I feel in my body diseases, I'm giving this lecture, but I'm not this body, it's not me. So my happiness is not this rotting old man body, that is not my happiness. My happiness is my eternal relationship with Krishna and my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Tridandi Goswami Maharaj Prabhupada, who so kindly gave me this name Sankarshan Das back in 1971, another name for Vishnu, actually also Balram sometimes called Sankarshan. So it is a great blessing to be given a name by my spiritual master. Now let me live according to that name and not something else. Let me not be Stephen Bridge any longer than I may be truly Sankarsan Das. So called Stephen Bridge. Let me actually be Sankarsan Das.
Guru Mataji: [indistinct]
Sankarsan Das : Let me actually be Sankarsan. What is that? Stephen Bridge Basi. I like to say that. Actually, the name Stephen is not a very not a very good name, you know why he was named after two people that died on time And the Bible, Stephen was stoned to death. The Jews didn't like that he was a Christian, so they stoned him to death. He was put to death by being stoned. My uncle Stephen, he died on a ship in World War II, sank, went down, the Japanese, or the German, sunk and he went down on a ship. So I was named after two people that died untimely, two Stephens that died untimely. So it wasn't a very good name to have. But this name is wonderful. Sankarshan Das. Kindly given to me by my spiritual master. So the spiritual name is a great treasure that reminds me who I actually am. I'm the eternal servant of Krishna. So we take our spiritual names as a great great blessing to help us get back to get back to get back to being who we actually are. Guru Mataji, you want to add some points? You want to add some points? You're a co-host. Anybody have any questions? Let’s see if we have any questions. There is a question here
Devotee : Srila Gurudev you said we have to connect all the time to krishna ,like like every time we.
Sankarsan Das : We should connect with Krishna every minute.
Devotee : Is that like in a prayer or is that like we are talking to him? How do we connect?
Sankarsan Das : You have to always think. You should always psycho-analyse yourself. What I am doing right now pleasing to Krishna. Am I doing it in a way that pleases Krishna? We should always psychoanalyze ourselves. Be your own psychiatrist. You analyze, the way that I I'm hearing the class, the way I'm giving the class, the way I'm offering the arti, the way I'm cutting the fruit, the way I'm taking out the garbage or whatever it may be, am I doing it in such a way that Krishna is pleased? By remembering him, That's the first thing. Remembering him. Remembering his teaching. You should always see where is my mind situated right now? Is it Krishna conscious or is it not? Is my mind thinking in such a way that it's pleasing to Krishna and Guru or is it not? Always psychoanalyze yourself. And when you see your mind is off the track, bring it back. Bring it back. Does that make sense? Okay, anybody else? See, we have... Here's one.
Devotee : Gurudev, You said about the case, getting on the case
Sankarsan Das : What is that?
Devotee : You said about getting on the case
Sankarsan Das : [indistinct]
Devotee : I find it's easier to get on to someone's case rather than my own.
Sankarsan Das : If you can't get on your own case, you are not qualified to get on anybody else's case.
Guru Mataji : Oh, that's true. Huh? That's true.
Sankarsan Das : If you can't get on your own case, you are not qualified to get on anybody else's case. That's right. First, bring your own. You have to make yourself Krishna conscious first before you can think about making other people Krishna conscious. Position, heal that self. You have to first of all make yourself properly situated before you can have any fun to make somebody else properly situated.
Guru Mataji : He says about the case.
Sankarsan Das : Case. Yeah, if I can't get in my own case first, I'm not bothered to get anybody else’s case.
Guru Mataji : But I'm saying, nobody can do on their own case.
Devotee : Yes.
Guru Mataji : We point fingers to everybody.
Devotee : Yes.
Sankarsan Das : If somebody can't get on their own case, they're not qualified to point a finger at anybody.
Guru Mataji : Well, they have. That's the way it is. How the world is?
Sankarsan Das : Huh Huh , What ?
Guru Mataji : Whole world is like that, you point finger at other.
Sankarsan Das : You point one finger, I got three, you point at myself. You point finger, I got three, you point at myself.
Guru Mataji : But we don't correct ourselves.
Sankarsan Das : The point is we have to correct ourselves.
Devotee : Yes, but that is very hard. That is so hard.
Sankarsan Das : You think it’s hard that’s your foolishness, it’s actually very easy.
Guru Mataji : It is
Sankarsan Das : You are making it hard by your own mental concoctions. It is actually very easy. We make it difficult.
Guru Mataji : It is
Sankarsan Das : So running in Krishna is easy. We make it difficult by all of our apprehensions, all our mental concoctions. We make it difficult. Actually, it is the easiest thing in the world. Like a duck taking in the water. It is the easiest thing to do. But we make it difficult by our dam mental concoctions. That rascal mind says, I don't know about this, I don't know about that. Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. The mind just goes on, maybe, maybe, maybe. Maybe Krishna is really God. Maybe spiritual, maybe Prabhupada is really a self realized. Maybe these books are actually for them. Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, doubting, doubting, doubting, doubting. We make it difficult with our doubts, that's the problem. We have to learn how to stop, kick out these doubts. Kick out the doubts with boot. Get out of here, you damn doubt. You're no longer welcome in my heart. Get out of here and don't you ever come back again. Kick the doubts out with boot. Is it? You're gonna kick those damn doubts with boot.
See any questions that are here on the internet? Yeah we got something coming in. Okay little majari, is it that one should be satisfied with whatever services one may be engaged in and not think like, oh I'm not able to do this or that service? Well whatever service is given you should take it as a blessing and try to do it in a first class way. I mean there are services that I'm asked to do and I have a very difficult time doing them. We have the little tiny decorated flowers that are put in Radha Damodar every night and to take them off and remove all the blue tags. It is the most difficult thing in the world for me to remove the blue tags without ruining the flowers. But it's a duty I've been given by Guru Maharaj Ji, the head pujari. So even though It's like a torture for me to do it. It's so difficult. I'm in total anxiety and stress. How can I do this thing? Such it's difficult, but I embrace it with enthusiasm. Whatever is the most difficult thing, if you embrace it with enthusiasm, that's how you make tremendous advancement. So any service you don't feel is suited for you, that's the best thing to learn how to master it and relish it. That's a very great opportunity.
Guru Mataji : That what we should all learn.
Sankarsan Das : Okay, now we have Amala Purana. In the Purport It is said that unless one accepts a mantra from one of these sampradāyas, the so-called mantra will not act in Kali-yuga. So, what about the followers of Jesus Christ and Prophet Muhammad? Well, so far as I know, they aren't even given mantras. I grew up as a Christian, we were never given any mantras. Of course we sang Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
Guru Mataji : But they do chant sometimes.
Sankarsan Das : Maybe that's a mantra.
Guru Mataji : Rosary, but they chant on rosary.
Sankarsan Das : I didn't hear about mantras from Jesus Christ.
Guru Mataji : May I ask? Yeah. What they chant on rosary?
Sankarsan Das : Oh, the Catholics, yeah, they chant rosary. Some Hail Mary, yeah, they do. Yeah, we, I was a Protestant, we didn't, The Catholics have the rosary they chant on.
Guru Mataji : They have beads.
Sankarsan Das : Yeah, they have beads and everything. The Catholics have the rosary, that's right. So, is it bona fide? That's an interesting question. Well, the real answer is they have polluted their Christian and Muslim religion by authorizing sinful activities like meat eating. There are even Christians who are in favor of abortion. I mean it's really getting bad. They're pro-abortion Christians if you can imagine that. So yeah, they polluted their Christianity and Mohammedanism, Islam by sinful activities. I grew up in a Christian church. We went to a potluck dinner every Wednesday night. It was all kind of meat dishes. In the church we were eating meat. So they polluted it. Whatever authenticity was there in the original teachings of Prophet Muhammad and Lord Jesus, they polluted it with sinful activities
Guru Mataji : What about Iskcon?
Sankarsan Das : What about who? We have to be, everyone do the same thing here? You see? It's like this idea that recreational sex is fine as long as you are married and wife. This is devotees interesting sinful consciousness into ISKCON also. So we have to be, we shouldn't let ISKCON be polluted by this idea that recreational sex is fine. Because actually, according to Vedic science, the semen, even just looking at the standpoint of health and longevity, the semen retained in the body of the male, it travels to the brain and nourishes the brain for spiritual understanding. It gives him longevity also and resistance against disease. So passing semen should be absolutely minimized only for procreation. It's the idea you can have recreational sex, it's not healthy, it's not good for the intelligence and it's also against the regulated principles.
Okay now we have Aditi. Why the Panchatatva is called the only absolute truth?
I don't even see that verse because the absolute, Krishna is the absolute, Every single verse of these scriptures is also the absolute truth. So I wouldn't say that only the Panchatatva the absolute truth. The Hare Krishna mantra is the absolute truth. All these verses of the Bhagavad Gita are the absolute truth.
Hare Krishna dasa. What is the greatest impediment for one to always keep the attitude of gratitude locked inside?
The greatest impediment, Desire for material sense gratification, subtle and gross, that's the greatest impediment. Subtle sense gratification and gross sense gratification, that's the greatest impediment keeping the attitude of gratitude, seeing everything happening as the mercy of Krishna. So we have to understand to gratify my subtle senses or the gross senses is not my real happiness. It is not me. I am not this body. I am not this mind. I am not this ego, the false ego. You think I need to be glorified, I need to be gratified in so many ways. It's not necessary for our happiness. Our happiness is simply that every thought, word and deed should be done to the pleasure of Guru and Krishna. It doesn't matter if I'm a millionaire or a pauper out on the street corner, trying to beg enough money to buy an apple to eat and survive. It doesn't matter what is my position in the material world. If I have the attitude of gratitude saying everything that is coming is the mercy of Krishna and everything that is done is for his pleasure and satisfaction, that is my success, that is my perfection. Any other questions from the locals here? Any arguments, any additions, Guru Mataji, corrections?
Guru Mataji : How to keep awake in the class.
Sankarsan Das : How to stay awake in the class. Well, I found one little trick. When you're really sleepy, you can tap yourself on the back of the neck. It stimulates the brain. That's one thing I found. If I get sleepy, I just tap the back of the neck. It stimulates the brain. It helps to wake it up. If it gets groggy, You just tap the back of the neck, like that. It works wonders for me when I get groggy, I just go, all the grogginess goes away, and boom, I'm back. That's one of the things.
Guru Mataji : But sometimes we don't feel that we are falling asleep. Really?
Sankarsan Das : I have a body that is itching in so many ways, I'm sorry if I scratch it sometimes. I'm tortured with itches all over this damn body. One of the special mercies of Krishna, giving me all this suffering. Help me remember I am not this damn rotting corpse. I am an eternal spiritual being, qualitatively one with Krishna himself. I am not this rotting corpse with so many pains and problems.
Guru Mataji : He is amazing. In Spanish we use that word, cuch. Cuch? Cuch? This rotting corpse that somebody tamed and brought it. It's amazing. Spanish use that word, cook.
Sankarsan Das : Cook? Cook?
Guru Mataji : Spanish, any Spanish they use this corprix. Something, corprix?
Devotee : Corpe.
Guru Mataji : Corpe. I think it's Corpe.
Devotee : I think it's Corpe.
Sankarsan Das : What's the Spanish word?
Devotee : Corpe.
Guru Mataji : For body ?
Sankarsan Das : Corpio.
Guru Mataji : What is the word for body ?
Sankarsan Das : Corpo.
Guru Mataji : Corpo. Yeah
Sankarsan Das : . Same thing as corpus; corpse
Guru Mataji : Yeah
Sankarsan Das : A corpse.A walking, talking corpse. A damn rotting corpse. See we got something else coming in. Yeah, here's something from Paramahamsa. You shared your experience, other mantras versus mantras you had immediate. Please elaborate, he wants elaboration. Well, very simple. I was looking for self-realization. There was a young hippie here in Austin looking for self-realization and some hippie friend of mine said this Maharishi Mahesh yogi is the way to go. And he was actually, so I followed his advice and I got initiated by Maharishi Mahesh yogi. I had to bring some flowers or something as an offering to my guru or some fruits or whatever. There was a picture of my guru. I remember the whole thing. And they gave me the mantra, but it didn't work. They had a special sex session. Anybody who's not getting, feeling any benefit, you come back for a special training, special sex session. I went there with the teacher and she again gave me the mantra, but it didn't work. But then when I came to a point, I realized, of course I got the Hare Krishna mantra, but I was still polluted by mayavadi philosophy at that time, when I first got it. But then later on, I tried to be God in so many ways it didn't work. But then I was thinking, well Jesus was a self-realized soul, what made him self-realized? So I can follow his example and become spiritually awakened. So I was reading the Bible, I was trying to figure out what made Jesus a self-realized soul and one day I found it and he says, Father not my will but thy will be done. So I didn't know, so I told myself I didn't know what God wanted me to do. And then it became, so I did, but then it became revealed to me, but that's a whole other pastime, how to find out what God wants, just ask Him. I didn't know what God wanted me to do as a leader, but I just asked Him, Dear God, please guide me how I can become your perfect servant. That became my mantra. Please guide me how I can become your perfect servant. And Krishna sent Visnujana Swami here, and he chanted with such feeling and love. We had a program down in Peace Park. He had his harmonium. I have a picture of it on my desk. Maybe you have seen the picture. And on top of the day too, it must have been there. He was chanting and Prasadam. He had a picture of Radha and Krishna and with such loving feeling he was chanting Hare Krishna. Wow! This is it. Chant Hare Krishna with Love ,you see Hare Krsna Hare. So instead of chanting the idea that I am God, you are God, we are all God, instead of chanting becoming God, that is mayavadi. Mayavadi is also chanted for the purpose of becoming Krishna. Yes, I am one with God. Now let me fully realize that I am Krishna, I am Krishna. So I can make God be Krishna again. But now in Visnujana-Swami I am going to be chanting and becoming a servant of God, a servant of the spiritual master. So that way I actually got the taste for the holy name, the mercy and Prabhupada said you be trained up in the expert guidance of His holiness, Visnujana swami. So I got very good training from Visnujana swami. That will be all detailed in my, shortly detail in my autobiography coming out hopefully early this year. Not, not even my memoir, we call it memoir. So anyway, we're a little over time now, we thank everybody for tuning in. Take this process seriously without, in kicking out all the frivolosity and jokingness and all this, take it very seriously and your lives will be unlimitedly sublime.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.
